Two new releases from Eishin Nose + Snapdragon are now available on all major streaming platforms: 8 and Epic FREAK.
Together, these albums document a recent collaborative project. In particular, the focus is on the intersection of composition and improvisation. At the same time, the music emphasizes real-time interaction and collective form. While both recordings feature the same ensemble, they present two distinct approaches.

8 consists of original compositions by Eishin Nose. In this setting, the music explores structure, melody, and harmonic language. At the same time, it does so through a highly interactive group approach.
In addition, the written material serves as a flexible framework for improvisation. As a result, the ensemble is able to shape the music organically.
Notably, the track “Short Monk” has reached the Top 10 of the current voting round in the International Songwriting Competition. In turn, this reflects early audience engagement with the project.

In contrast, Epic FREAK presents the group in a completely improvised setting. In this case, there are no predetermined forms or structures. Instead, each piece unfolds in real time.
Here, the music develops through listening, response, and shared direction. As a result, the album captures a more open and exploratory side of the ensemble. In particular, the focus is on texture, pacing, and spontaneous form.

Taken together, these two releases offer complementary perspectives. On one hand, 8 emphasizes composed material. On the other hand, Epic FREAK focuses entirely on improvisation. In both cases, the music highlights the role of collective interaction in shaping form.
More broadly, this project represents a period of deep focus for me as an alto saxophonist and improviser. As such, it captures some of my strongest and most cohesive ensemble work to date.
Looking ahead, more updates, including upcoming performances, will be announced soon.
